Christmas is a wonderful time for giving gifts, but for me, the most meaningful gifts are those rooted in gratitude.
A little over three years ago, I met my neighbors Linda and Lanny, and what began as a simple neighborhood walk turned into one of my favorite stories of connection and kindness.
I often enjoy walking my dogs through my beloved subdivision of Oak Park in Johnson City, Tennessee. One afternoon, while out walking my sweet Bella, I noticed something unusual in the distance—what appeared to be a glass greenhouse tucked behind a couple of larger homes. It was partially hidden and hard to place, but it caught my eye immediately. At the time, I was actively searching for a glass greenhouse of my own, so my curiosity was sparked.
Over the coming weeks and months, I began asking neighbors if they knew anything about it. Surprisingly, no one seemed to notice it. Most shrugged it off or weren’t sure what I was talking about.
Then one day, everything changed.
While on a walk, I saw a man retrieving his mail from the mailbox. I said hello and eagerly asked my now well-rehearsed question:
“Do you know who owns that glass greenhouse?”
He smiled and replied, “Yes—it’s ours. Come on back.”
Without hesitation, Bella and I eagerly followed Lanny down his driveway and into what felt like a secret garden. We passed a charming, generously sized yard filled with neatly arranged garden beds bordered by a sweet English-style wooden fence. And then there it was—the greenhouse.
A stunning 20×20 glass greenhouse with concrete floors, complete with electricity and running water. I was in absolute awe. Lanny proudly walked me through it, pointing out the vegetable starts he was growing for his garden, naming each one with care.
Then he asked, “Would you like some?”
Oh yes, please!
We talked about plants, gardening, and Tennessee weather as we made our way back through their expansive yard, where I also had the pleasure of meeting his wife, Linda. From that day on, something special began.
Every spring, I receive a text:
“Lanny has your pepper plants ready.”
And every summer, another:
“Your tomato plants are ready.”
Year after year, Lanny supplies me with the pepper and tomato plants that fill my garden. And every visit includes time spent chatting, catching up, and enjoying the warmth of truly wonderful neighbors.
This Christmas, my gratitude extends far beyond peppers and tomato plants. It is rooted in Oak Park — a neighborhood that truly feels like home — and in neighbors like Linda and Lanny who remind me how important it is to know the people who live around us.
In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, Oak Park has shown me the value of slowing down, walking the neighborhood, saying hello, and building relationships right where we live. Good neighbors create strong communities, and strong communities create places where people truly belong.
Sometimes, the greatest gifts aren’t wrapped or placed under a tree. They are grown, shared, and nurtured over time — just like friendships. And for that, I am deeply grateful to call Oak Park home.
